Side Effects of Plastic SurgeryPlastic surgery is a means of enhancing or altering the appearance by undergoing a surgical procedure that involves restructuring certain aspects of the skin or bones. When people begin to age, some will explore different methods of improving their looks in order to remain looking as young as they feel. Plastic surgery offers patients one way of looking younger.

While the majority of surgeries render satisfactory results, there is always a risk involved when opting to go under the knife, even when it is for cosmetic enhancement purposes. Not only is it possible to experience undesirable results, plastic surgery can cause serious medical issues. Any type of surgery has risks and plastic surgery is no different.

Potential Side Effects

Before opting for plastic surgery, it is important to research and understand the risks involved. Anyone who undergoes plastic surgery should be aware of the following possible side effects:
  • Infection
  • Blood Clots
  • Nausea
  • Complications from Sutures
It is not uncommon for patients to experience an infection after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure. Skin tissue is open during the process and while it is healing, it is very sensitive. More often than not, an infection will merely slow down the healing process. However, severe infections can potentially be fatal if they are not taken care of appropriately.

Blood clots are also a common side effect of plastic surgery and can be dangerous. When recuperating after any surgery, the body must remain immobile as much as possible. If a body does not move regularly, blood can begin to pool and that may form a fatal clot. The blood clot is not fatal if it breaks itself up on its own.

Complications can arise if the blood clot becomes dislodged, however. When a blood clot travels and reaches the heart it can cause a heart attack.

Other side effects of plastic surgery include nausea or vomiting, both of which will eventually pass.

Due to advancements in the cosmetic enhancement industry, plastic surgery is becoming less common. There are now far less invasive, non-surgical procedures that can be used to enhance the appearance and reverse the aging process.

People are opting for non-surgical facelifts using methods such as Botox injections. Botox reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through a short series of injections into affected areas of the face. By causing the expression muscles underneath the skin to relax, lines on the face are smoothed over.

Other options of non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures include laser therapy, filler injections such as Restylane, or chemical and deep herbal peels. All of these procedures offer satisfactory results that can last up to six months.

Unlike plastic surgery, the results are not permanent and the side effects are not dangerous. Find out more about non-invasive cosmetic enhancement procedures by contacting your skin care professional.

Unleashing The Plastic Surgery Beast
" About 5 to 10 percent of people who seek plastic surgery suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a condition in which people look normal, "but they see a distorted image," says Jamie Feusner, M.D., a psychiatrist who heads UCLA's BDD Research Program."

Heidi Montag was a cute and bubbly 20-something star of hit reality TV series "The Hills". Being the plainer of the female cast, she was often viewed more as the kid next door and became determined to become a sexier star.

In a shocking move Ms. Montag underwent a dramatic body-altering procedure, completing 10 surgeries at one time including having her breasts enlarged, her chin re-sculpted, liposuction, and augmentation on her buttocks. This process was quite painful and took over two months to recover from, during which time ointments had to be applied to sensitive wounds and everyday tasks required assistance. Her face has become nearly immobile, and Heidi herself has said many times she wishes she had never done something so extreme, especially at such a young age.

Taking things to an even more bizarre extreme is the story of obscenely wealthy New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein, who believing her ailing marriage would be saved by her husbands fondness for wild cats, has spent in excess of $2,000,000 in an attempt to gain a more feline appearance. Her husband was horrified at her transformation and divorced her in 1999, driving her to continue in her extreme addiction of finding beauty inside a procedure she can no longer reverse. At age 71, Ms. Wildenstein is virtually unrecognizable as a human being.

Making such a life-changing decision rashly can have grave consequences for the rest of your life. A tummy tuck may make you more attractive, but it will not make you any smarter or richer. Plastic surgery should be a reflection of who you feel you are inside, rather than trying to create someone inside through the use of outward surgical methods.
